Zam-Zam's Dreams

Zam-Zam's Dreams

Tue, Feb 23, 2010

Zam-Zam grew up as a member of a local religion. In those days very few in their religion allowed their children to attend school. But Zam-Zam was given that opportunity. Members of a Bible distribution organization gave New Testaments to Zam-Zam and her classmates. Most of them threw theirs away, but she kept hers. It was years, though, before she opened it.

In the spring of 1988, doctors at Mayo Clinic diagnosed me with a rare and chronic autoimmune inflammation of the skeletal muscles and blood vessels called Polymyositis. I was then a pastor at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church in Minot, North Dakota. Receiving this diagnosis, I remember saying to God, "My life has been yours since I was a teenager. Whatever you choose to do in my life, it's OK with me." On the amazing journey since that day, I've learned so much about our awesome God. He's shown me he heals spiritually, emotionally, relationally, physically and financially.

Past-due Rent No Match for Grace

Past-due Rent No Match for Grace

Sun, Nov 01, 2009

With an economic crunch in full swing and our church populated mostly by young adults who have little money to spare, we were no longer able to afford college rental fees. Since November 2008 we’ve been meeting in homes, except for all-church gatherings that are still held at the college. Our big concern was that we still owed the college $15,000 in past-due rent. With no way to generate the funds we needed, all we could do was call on God for help.

It all started with a used car Well, not just any used car, but a particular used car that the Johnson's were looking for. When they found it, they got more than they realized-and just what God intended.

Our Mission is Christ

Our Mission is Christ

In my recent readings and musings on missions I came across an article titled Luther and Missions in the 16th Century by the Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz. Dr. Schulz reminds us of Luther's take on missions when he says, "All Christians are obliged to missionary witness. They live for the sake of their neighbors and assist them in witness and deed."

While our entire curriculum has a view to God's mission, courses like World Religions and Cross-Cultural Communications require students to apply their learning in real-life border-crossing situations.

Maple Park

Maple Park

Mon, Aug 17, 2009

God moved in the hearts of the people at Maple Park. Not only did he put resources into the hands of our congregation, he moved them to offer them up to him. We have discovered anew that in the area of stewardship of all our resources, it is more blessed to give than to receive.

Seeing God's Solution

Seeing God's Solution

The community was changing. Everything from storefront windows, to smells of Chinese food in the air; this part of Brooklyn went through a drastic change. What do you do? A church that had thrived in its ministry to Norwegian immigrants was now desperate for a new vision.
