Prayer and Faith

Prayer and Faith

Tue, Mar 06, 2012

Have you been praying for a specific request for months, even years? If you are praying this way, it is evidence of your faith. You believe that God can answer your prayer. If you didn’t believe that, you would stop bringing that request to God, wouldn’t you? Your perseverance in prayer reflects your faith.

When God Comes Down

When God Comes Down

When Jesus walked this earth, it was not as the agent of God. Jesus did not enter the temple as God’s agent to judge corruption any more than he was simply God’s representative dying on the cross for our salvation. He was not just an agent of God. He is God—in the flesh. God died on the cross for sinners.

Who Is Listening When We Pray?

Prayer is a popular topic, or so it seemed when two women’s magazines arrived at our home in December each featuring a cover article on prayer!

Jesus voluntarily left his throne in heaven to enter our world. He existed before the beginning, and yet he lowered himself to be born, as a child, fully human, in a manger. At his baptism he had no sin to confess, and yet he entered the water, humbling himself, to identify with us. Why? The short answer is, love!

People sometimes talk of their tribulation and then stop right there: “Trials? Suffering? Well, grin and bear it, for such is life…” But, looking through the lens of Scripture, tribulation never stands alone. There is always another sentence, one that contains hope.

God sent a rare auto-immune blood disease my way, called cold agglutinin. For the last 16 years the daily question I deal with is, how cold is it going to be in this place, or that place? This has greatly curtailed my ability to be involved in church work in recent years. I loved serving the Lord in church, but he had something different in mind.

His Mercy

On the cross Jesus took the debt we could not pay, and paid it in full. As children of God, justified by the blood of Christ, we live in response to his grace and mercy. We love as he loves us, and we forgive as he forgives us.

Prayer: Praising God's Mercy

“The mercies of God never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22, 23). The Apostle Paul beseeches his readers to gratefully consider the mercies of God and to offer themselves to him (Romans 12:1). Just what are these God-given mercies that, by definition, we have not earned and do not deserve?

We need somebody who we can trust enough to share our burdens. We, of course, can and should cast our burdens on Christ (1 Peter 5:7), but from personal experience I know that it is therapeutic to be able to share my deepest needs with another person who is also on this sometimes difficult journey in life.

What should church be about? Well, the Christian Church should be about Christ, of course. But practically speaking, how do we make it about Jesus Christ?

Prayer: It Takes All Kinds

“It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round!” That’s one of my wife’s favorite expressions when we encounter a disagreeable person. Maybe you have similar thoughts about some of your neighbors or people you work with. Think of poor Moses.

I suggest that every vocation you engage in is your calling for that time. And that God is using the earlier experiences to prepare you for the later experiences. And that in every one of your vocations, your real calling is a constant—you are sent to serve God.

Children of the Promise

Children of the Promise

By the power of his Word and his Holy Spirit, God penetrates the hardened hearts of nonbelievers, people as helpless as the stones in the river, and they are transformed into children of Abraham, children of the promise—not by birth, but by faith.

Time for a checkup on your prayer life? I read a new description of prayer the other day: “Prayer is the highway that faith takes into the power of God.”

by Troy Tysdal | Our Lord works through us, to bring encouragement to one another, and to bring light to those in darkness. We may not be called to baptize in the Jordan, or to shout from street corners, but we are called to be witnesses in our community and to the ends of the earth.

Daniel prayed. As a young man facing death he prayed with his three friends and God revealed the king’s dream to him. On his way to becoming prime minister, he persisted in prayer, was thrown into a den of lions, watched God stop the mouths of the beasts, and saw God melt the heart of the king.

On September 5th my wife and I celebrated the birth of our first child. I was overjoyed and relieved when I performed my first act as a father and counted the child’s fingers and toes. I marveled at God’s grace and mercy when the doctor declared we were the parents of a perfectly health little boy.

Eight Tall Ships under full sail entering the Duluth, Minnesota were greeted by a fleet of pleasure craft and sailboats that looked tiny by comparison. What caught my eye were the masts and the sails – strong enough to withstand a gale, but totally dependent on the wind for power. How like our lives – totally dependent on the Holy Spirit for power!

All roads lead to Rome. That is a saying that most of us are familiar with. It means there are many ways to arrive at the same destination. Unfortunately, our postmodern culture has adopted this philosophy, and applied it to salvation.

We are all creatures of habit. Should Christians allocate a specific time each day to pray and read the Bible? Should they be consistent so that it gets to be a habit, so that if they miss a day, they feel like the day is not complete?

Disruption: anything that messes with my routine. Today's economic downturn - a massive disruption. Many of us have felt the pain of being told, "Your job has been terminated." Or maybe you're a young person completing your schooling only to find out that the career opportunity you had worked so hard to prepare for no longer exists. Dreams and plans disrupted. Where do we turn?

My three year old daughter feels the need to constantly remind me about her needs as if she's worried that I won't provide for her. Shouting "Daddy, I need milk!" as I am pouring her a glass. Asking me for the third time, "Daddy, help me with my shoes," even though I'm in the process of bending over to help her. Am I doing the same thing to God when I worry about what I will "eat or drink"?

How Was Your Summer?

How Was Your Summer?

Fri, Oct 30, 2009

This summer, I caught a glimpse of what the love of God looks like. I've heard it hundreds of times from the love chapter. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs..." (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). At camp, we were encouraged to love the campers "where they're at."
