Heroines of the Faith

Heroines of the Faith

Thu, Jul 01, 2010

Hebrews 11 lists many people whose faith ministered to and blessed generations of people. We asked women who have been active in women’s ministries to tell us about the women in their lives whom God has used to minister to them.

Tim Ysteboe's Work "We Believe" to be Released

Mon, Apr 26, 2010

Tim Ysteboe, a Lutheran Brethren pastor who also taught at Lutheran Brethren Seminary and served in the Church of the Lutheran Brethren's Office of the President, had a labor of love for at least the last 15 years of his life here. The result of his labor is the book We Believe: Commentary on the Statement of Faith, to be released in June. Tim Ysteboe went home to his Lord in November 2009 at the age of 61. As a child, Tim was a charter member of Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church in Moorhead, MN. After graduating from Lutheran Brethren Seminary, he pastored Lutheran Brethren congregations in LeSueur, MN and Succusaunna, NJ.

Council of Directors Meeting Reflection

Council of Directors Meeting Reflection

Sun, Apr 25, 2010

The wonderful thing, above anything else, is that the Council is a group of leaders who desires to see the work of the Church honor and glorify God. God is the true leader of the Church, his Church, and we are merely a group of men and women who pray that we will be faithful to his calling.

Lessons from My Children

Lessons from My Children

Tue, Feb 23, 2010

I now find myself gazing at the empty tomb. What exactly does that mean for us? There isn't enough space here to even scratch the surface of what it means, but lately, the Holy Spirit has revealed a few truths that have overwhelmed me.

Much Will Be Expected to Whom Much is Given

Much Will Be Expected to Whom Much is Given

Tue, Feb 23, 2010

The little lady of the home found comfort in the hand wrung sheets she'd recently draped across the wooden fence posts. She was a caretaker. She took care of the house in which she was allowed to stay. She took care of the plants, the yard, and the people within. She took care of the neighbors in need, and she took care of those passing by. She even took care of those who couldn't pass by.

Late...for My First Dessert Night! (Women's Ministries)

Tue, Feb 23, 2010

I thought driving from Everett to Bellingham would be similar to the trip I had often made from Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Fargo, North Dakota - about an hour in length, depending on how slippery the roads might be in January. Hmmm. Not quite the same, I found out.

Let It Shine

Let It Shine

Tue, Feb 23, 2010

Minnesotans cringed a few years ago when their colorful former governor declared that organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people - a typical stereotype from skeptics in our day. Not a very flattering picture, but if you really think about it, there's not much about human nature as we know it that is very flattering. It makes you wonder at times why God bothers with us at all. Thankfully, he does.

iPod Musings for a New Year

iPod Musings for a New Year

Mon, Dec 28, 2009

One morning as I started my normal walk with my iPod playing in my ears, I decided I would do something a little crazy. Instead of looking at the ground in front of me, I decided to keep my eyes up and look at what was happening around me.

Never Resign on a Monday

Never Resign on a Monday

Mon, Dec 28, 2009

There is a common blues that can overtake a pastor after an exhausting and possibly discouraging Sunday in which much of his public ministry is on display.

Joy & Peace

Joy & Peace

Mon, Nov 30, 2009

On April 1, 1998 at the age of 49, I had a near death experience that subsequently has tremendously impacted my life. At about 7:30 a.m. that day, I decided to clear our driveway of the heavy, wet snow that had fallen during the night. I used a snow scoop until the task was completed. Upon entering the house I was sweating profusely and complained of a slight pain in my chest area.

The Upside-Down Christmas Tree

The Upside-Down Christmas Tree

Sun, Nov 29, 2009

I was shopping in mid-October in a local nursery and admiring all of the new Christmas decorations! Forget the fun and frivolity of a Harvest Festival; there they were in the corner of the store on sale for 70% off! And Thanksgiving? Well, the retailers were giving thanks and feeling blessed that we, the consumers, were gearing up for the spending frenzy of November 25. Just around the corner something caught my eye: a fully decorated Christmas tree with indigo blue and gold ornaments, and richly decorated scarves. More than the beauty of the ornaments, what really captured my attention was the placement of the tree.

Mission Impact 2009

This summer ten youth and young adults participated in a short-term mission experience called “Mission Impact 2009.” Each team helped with various outreach projects. As a result of these activities, scores of children and dozens of new families heard the message of God’s love for them in Jesus Christ.

Next Steps: First Meeting of the Council of Directors

Sat, Oct 31, 2009

An important “first” under this new structure took place September 16-18, as the Council of Directors came together in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. It was a time of prayer and discussion, as we looked to God for guidance in the first steps of implementing the new provisions of the amended constitution. Also meet the Regional Pastors!

Youth Convention 2009

Youth Convention 2009

Sat, Oct 31, 2009

Nine seminars, three concerts, small group discussions, tournament competitions, hiking, fishing, swimming, and exploring the beautiful mountain surroundings rounded out the experience for another biennial youth convention. Over those four days I watched a significant group of CLB youth hear and respond to a very clear gospel message.

In or Out?

Wed, Aug 26, 2009

The life you live is a response to what God has done for you. This is, in fact, true worship. You are not living for yourself, your neighbor, your family or your friends. You are living for God.

I know that when my wife and I are traveling we often have different ideas as to how to get to the destination we have in mind. "Why didn't you turn there?" "Because I want to go this way." "But..." I'm grateful there is one way to God through Jesus Christ.

Prayer and Twitter

Prayer and Twitter

Wed, Aug 26, 2009

Is prayer like tweeting? If I'm twittering, I don't really know if any of my friends are paying attention to what I'm writing. But I know for certain that God not only hears, but He answers my prayers. According to the writer to the Hebrews, "He (Jesus) always lives to make intercession for us."

Standing at the headwaters of the Mississippi River was a "bucket list" moment for me. As the 2007 movie of that title reveals, a bucket list is a list of the things you'd like to do before you kick it...the bucket. I'd never thought about it this way, but I'd always wanted to see the spot where the mighty Mississippi begins. And so, on a beautiful day in 2009, here it was.

Sustainability and the Church

Sustainability and the Church

Wed, Aug 26, 2009

In the July/August issue of Fast Company, I ran across a sidebar titled, "Nature's 10 Simple Rules for Survival." As I read the list of "rules" I couldn't help but see if they might help me address church sustainability and survival in a world which has gone just a little nuts. I'm talking about the church world, not just the business world.

Would you rather be preached to or taught by a person whose Bible never got used? Never got a word underlined? Never got a note written in the margin? Never took a little abuse because it was constantly taken from a shelf and, over time, got used up? No, I don't think so.

"Who are the stones on your breastplate? Are they your children? Husband? Grandchildren? Sisters or brothers? Nieces and nephews? Missionaries?" She (Marion Werdal) shared that her thirty-eight great-grandchildren are some of the stones on her breastplate that she prays for! She challenged us to pray "Lord, lay some soul upon my heart, and love that soul through me."

In this first Blog (Bruce Log) I'm going to make a confession, then an apology and then offer some advice. That's what usually happens with repentant people: You are sorry for something; you apologize for it, change your behavior, and then tell everyone else that they should, too. Well, sorry, but here goes:

How Does God Work in Your Life?

Because of our interactions with Barbara, my church has opened its doors as a meeting place for a social club for the blind and has helped to raise money for guide dogs for the blind. Contacts made through the social club have put us in touch with other organizations assisting the handicapped.

Face to Face (Women's Ministries)

Mon, Aug 17, 2009

Seeing how many women are being affected by job loss and financial stress made a big impact on me. Others are facing family illnesses, church conflicts, and loneliness. Their faith is being tested. I spoke several times about the hope that is ours in Jesus; the firm foundation on which we can stand in these days that for many are unsettling and dark. - Ruth Vallevik (Director, Women's Ministries of the CLB)

Sent

Sat, Aug 15, 2009

There was an obvious sense of "sending" while on the mission trip due to the distance between Cameroon and each of our homes. The realization that the mission of our home churches was strongly connected to what we were doing with churches in Cameroon shifted my understanding of "being sent" from merely applying to my time in Cameroon to applying to my entire life as a follower of Christ.

Many Japanese think that because they are Buddhists, they shouldn't come to a church service. However, our Church's Children's Christmas Program gave us a chance to tell many the real meaning of Christmas. Christmas is not Santa's birthday as many Japanese children answer, when asked, "Whose birthday does Christmas celebrate?"

I visited by phone with Tresa Myers, Lynnwood, Washington, past president of the Northwest District of Women's Ministries - and Kari Swanson, a traveling nurse based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They were two of the 20-member team who recently returned from a short-term mission trip to Cameroon. Women's Ministries is a long supporter of missions, so I asked these two women to share their perspectives with us.

Greater Grace: A Church in Transition

Fri, Aug 14, 2009

"The first area of change was in our name. After a lengthy process of considering a name change, the name, Greater Grace, was offered at a business meeting and it seemed appropriate because we are a church that focuses on, and trusts in, God's Grace."
